Manufacturing process

The production of diesel particulate filter systems requires numerous in depth productions steps.

Powder to Substrate

The substrate composition which was developed by Hug Engineering AG has to be mixed and kneaded in specialized machines. After the mixture passes testing and reaches is final consistency it will be extruded in its end form. This process takes about 4 hours.
Immediately after being extruded, the substrate will enter the drying process. This complicated but gentle method removes fluid by freeze-drying. This process takes about 7 to 9 days including pre- and post drying.

Substrate to finished product

Once the silicon carbide substrate has been dried, it will be cut into the needed sizes. The next step is firing. For this 12 hour process, a specially developed, continuous kiln with varying temperature zones is used. The next procedure is the application of the catalytic coating. Catalytic activity is then checked and the closing of the substrate’s honey comb shaped channels follows. Using cement, a checkerboard pattern is being used to close alternating cannels. After the completion of all these steps, the substrate is now cut into round systems. Finally, the round filters are installed in stainless steal housings and are ready for final quality control.
